A Community by Design by a ph oto a ph by os ph t. pi Inspired by the co-housing movement, the founders of Nubanusit Neighborhood Farm created a brand-new, old-fashioned, environmentally sustainable neighborhood in Peterborough. Shelley GoGuen hulbert and her family had lived for six years in a small, vibrant New Hampshire town with neighbors nearby. They also had lived for sixteen years on a farm outside of that town. Both locations were pleasing, but had their drawbacks. In town, it possible to raise dairy cows; on the farm, there enough friendly (human) faces. So it was a happy coincidence about six years ago when, at the same time Shelley happened to be reading a book about co-housing, she and husband Robin Hulbert learned of seventy acres for sale within walking distance of downtown. Many aspects of the project had to be fitted zoning, design and construction, to name just today Nubanusit Neighborhood Farm in West Peterborough is a reality. Twenty-one of the twenty-nine available units are now a bad percentage considering the recent economy. With about forty residents living in separate but thoughtfully connected homes, Nubanusit is part of a worldwide movement that is helping redefine community. about the neighborhood The units of different sizes (fourplexes, duplexes and single-family homes) are clustered on a small portion of the overall site, so as to leave as much open space as possible and preserve valuable farmland. As is typical of many co-housing communities, the homes are small (by current U.S. standards). new hampshire home a a i 010
